The present invention relates generally to in-furnace oxygen enrichment of molten metal in a blast furnace, and is particularly concerned with a method and apparatus for achieving gas-solid separation of the oxygen enriched melt. Known arrangements for in-furnace oxygen enrichment of molten metal include the use of gas entry devices in the tuyeres, and in-furnace arrangements for bubbling oxygen through the molten metal. In these prior art methods, the oxygen enriched melt is usually drawn off at the surface of the melt. A primary disadvantage of these prior art arrangements is the high thermal load due to the higher heat transfer through the melt. The additional load is also due to the lower heat transfer characteristics of the oxygen enriched melt. In order to minimize these problems, the prior art has developed arrangements for in-furnace oxygen enrichment of molten steel at temperatures below the melting point of the steel and in which the oxygen enriched melt is rapidly cooled, for example by rapidly pouring it into a vessel containing water or some other coolant. However, the advantages of rapid cooling by water cooling are offset by increased wear and erosion of the equipment. The net result of this is that these prior art arrangements are ineffective, in terms of cost and reliability, for the enrichment of steel at a temperature of 1300.degree. C. Moreover, there is a growing need for in-furnace oxygen enrichment of molten steel at lower temperatures and in which the oxygen enriched melt is retained inside the furnace for long periods of time. The problem of maintaining the oxygen enriched melt at a temperature below the melting point of the steel is particularly important when the molten metal is used for the production of steel products having a very low carbon content, e.g. slabs and blooms for hot rolling. The low carbon content of the steel produces an electric arc which allows the melt to be quenched with the minimum number of times, thereby producing a steel product having excellent ductility and toughness. In order to maintain the steel products within the optimum range of acceptable product quality, these steel products should have a carbon content below 0.005% as measured by analysis of the molten steel just before it is taken from the furnace.
